Now I know I am not the smallest girl in the bunch, but I try to live a healthy lifestyle. Growing up and up until I was about 20, I was very active and used to dance. Since I have stopped dancing, I have gained weight. I don’t go to the gym now because the gyms around my area are filled with pro- football players and other athletes as well as singers and rappers. Kinda intimidating right?? Well, while I was driving down the street I saw a sea of Black girls running. After doing a little research, I found out about the group called, Black Girls RUN!®. While I haven’t been out running with them yet, I LOVE what they stand for.
Did you know that obesity has become an epidemic in the African-American community? We all know that we need to eat healthy and workout to keep fit but we’re not necessarily doing it. Can you guess what one of the biggest reasons why is? Our HAIR! As you can tell from the billion dollar hair industry, hair is important to Black women and many of us don’t want to mess it up running or doing other types of exercises.
Now with me being natural, I really don’t understand the whole “I don’t want to mess up my hair” thing, but I hear it all the time. Will we really sacrifice our health for our hair? What are some solutions?

Check out some hairstyles that are great for working out and sweating:
Mix Motions® Hydrate My Curls Pudding and the Define My Curls Creme and do two strand twists. You can do them any size. The smaller you do them, the longer they last. Add some Shine Enhancing Pomade to your edges to add a little bit of shine and make your edges lay down. You can do them every week or two and can even wash them.
As a bonus: When you take them out, you will have nice defined curls you can wear out too!
Cornrows don’t have to make you look like a kid. There are so many creative ways to do cornrows or flat twists. Start off by washing and conditioning your hair to get a good base. Try cornrowing or flat twisting your hair into a cute updo or pompadour. Perfect for the gym and for that hot date.
Try a protective style like extensions. They last about a month and you can protect your hair. Protecting your hair doesn’t mean neglecting YOUR hair and scalp. Make sure you take a bottle with a nozzle attachment, put some shampoo like the Motions® Moisturizing Cleanser (for natural hair) in it and make sure you get in between your cornrows. This way you are getting all of the sweat and dirt from your hair. After this, use a curling crème and sit under the dryer to let the majority of your hair dry underneath. When you get out, you have defined curly extensions that work easily with workouts.
The key is to stick with hairstyles that last a couple of days to a month so you can protect your tresses while you work out and sweat. Remember to cleanse your hair well!
