#TravelTuesday Free Walking Tour In London Review + Other European Cities
I was in London all last week and I went to attend the World Travel Market to chat with some tourism boards. While there, I decided to spend an extra couple of days after the conference and do a little sight-seeing. The last time I was in London, I was 18 years old and I basically don’t remember anything except it being cold and birds flying around me lol.
RachelTravels.com told me about a free walking tour she did so I hopped on Google and New Europe Tours/Sandemans popped up. I signed up for the 11am tour and it said it was a 2.5 hour tour so I was prepared with my comfortable shoes.
I rushed on the tube (their train system) and got off at the station and ran literally to the meet up spot getting there at 11am on the dot. There were over 100 people waiting for the tours. They then broke us up into groups of 30.
My tour guide was Becky, a born and bred Briton who studied history in college. She put all of her knowledge to good use and took us on a historic journey throughout the London streets.
I don’t want to give all of the stories away, but here are some highlights so you know what to expect:
You get to see the inspiration behind a scene in Harry Potter that is supposed to be pretty popular. I haven’t seen Harry Potter so I wasn’t too into this…or rather, I didn’t know what I was looking for/at lol.
The Changing Of The Guards
If you go on the right day (make sure you go on the right day), you can see the changing of the guards. In the summer, this happens daily. In the Fall/Winter, this happens every other day. I planned my tour this day so I could see it.
Royal Family/Buckingham Palace
You will see where the Royal Family lives and hear interesting stories about them- past and present. You will also get great views of Buckingham Palace. Spoiler Alert- So many beheadings of royal women in their history.
Interested in war? You will get some brief history about the World Wars and about Winston Churchill. You also pass by The Churchhill War Rooms which is a museum underground that is actually where he made decisions, took naps, etc…while bombs were going off.
When I think of London in movies and pics, I think of beautiful parks (when it’s actually sunny). You will get to stroll through a park and get a glimpse of the London Eye.
Well the actually name isn’t Big Ben, but you will get the history on that. This is one of the most photographed places in London.
There was so much more besides this…just wanted to give a brief overview of what to expect.
After 2.5 hours, I felt like I learned alot about London history and there was so much more to learn.
Becky did an awesome job! Even though the tour is free, the tour guides work off of tips so we definitely all tipped her. This was great for a free tour. I definitely recommend you check out New Europe Tours if you find yourself in London, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin and more.
I can’t wait until my next city I tour!
